Quick answer: A domain name is a readable internet address, such as example.co.uk, that people use to reach a website or send email. It is registered separately from the service that hosts your site’s files. DNS connects the domain to the appropriate web and email services.
Registering a domain does not automatically include a website, mailbox or hosting plan. Before moving providers, identify who manages your DNS and which services must stay connected. Our DNS migration checklist helps prevent accidental email disruption.
A domain name is the address used to access websites on the internet. It serves as a user-friendly substitute for an IP address, which is a series of numbers identifying a server or computer. A domain name consists of letters and/or numbers and can be in the form of words or phrases. For example:
- Domain name: example.com
- IP address: 192.0.2.1
Instead of remembering numbers, users can simply type the domain name into their browser.
Structure of a Domain Name
Domain names consist of two main parts:
- Second-Level Domain (SLD): This is the unique name chosen by the website owner.
(example in example.com.) - Top-Level Domain (TLD): This is the suffix indicating the domain’s type or location – for example:
.com, .org, .uk
- When using
example.com- example is the SLD.
- .com is the TLD.

Domain registration does not include every website service
Registering a domain gives you the right to use that name for its registration period, subject to registry rules. It does not automatically provide web hosting, a working inbox or a website. You may keep your domain with one provider while hosting your website or email with another.
Keep registrar login details secure, enable renewal reminders and check that account contact details are up to date. If you are starting from scratch, read how to set up hosting and email.
